    Simulation-assisted control in building energy management systems

    Technological advances in real-time data collection, data transfer and ever-increasing computational power are bringing simulation-assisted control and on-line fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) closer to reality than was imagined when building energy management systems (BEMSs) were introduced in the 1970s. This paper describes the development and testing of a prototype simulation-assisted controller, in which a detailed simulation program is embedded in real-time control decision making. Results from an experiment in a full-scale environmental test facility demonstrate the feasibility of predictive control using a physically-based thermal simulation program

    A comprehensive description of user problem definition for the PAN AIR (Panel Aerodynamics) system is given. PAN AIR solves the 3-D linear integral equations of subsonic and supersonic flow. Influence coefficient methods are used which employ source and doublet panels as boundary surfaces. Both analysis and design boundary conditions can be used. This User's Manual describes the information needed to use the PAN AIR system. The structure and organization of PAN AIR are described, including the job control and module execution control languages for execution of the program system. The engineering input data are described, including the mathematical and physical modeling requirements. Version 3.0 strictly applies only to PAN AIR version 3.0. The major revisions include: (1) inputs and guidelines for the new FDP module (which calculates streamlines and offbody points); (2) nine new class 1 and class 2 boundary conditions to cover commonly used modeling practices, in particular the vorticity matching Kutta condition; (3) use of the CRAY solid state Storage Device (SSD); and (4) incorporation of errata and typo's together with additional explanation and guidelines

    What factors are most influential in increasing cervical cancer screening attendance? An online study of UK-based women1

    Objective: Cervical cancer is the fourth most commonly occurring cancer in women worldwide. The UK has one of the highest cervical screening rates in Europe, yet attendance has been decreasing. This study aimed to identify barriers and facilitators to screening attendance and assess the perceived importance of these factors. Methods: 194 women living in the UK were recruited via an online research recruitment website to an online survey. Most participants (N = 128, 66.0%) were currently up-to-date with cervical screening, 66 participants (34.0%) had never been screened, or were overdue for screening. Participants identified barriers and facilitators to cervical screening attendance via free-text responses and were also asked to rate a list of factors as most to least influential over decision making. Results were analysed using thematic content analysis and ratings analysed using multivariable analyses. Results: The most commonly reported barriers were: Pain/discomfort; Embarrassment; and Time. These were also rated as most influential for decision making. The most commonly reported facilitators were: Ease of making appointments; Peace of mind; and Fear of cancer/preventing serious illness. While importance rating of barriers did not differ by previous screening behaviour, ratings of some facilitators significantly differed. Up-to-date women rated believing screening is potentially life-saving and part of personal responsibility as significantly more important than overdue/never screened women. Conclusion: This study confirmed that factors which encourage screening are key to the decision of whether to attend screening. Women suggested several improvements that might make attending easier and improve uptake, including flexibility of screening locations to fit around work hours and childcare arrangements. Psychological facilitators included the peace of mind that screening brings and the belief that cervical cancer screening is potentially life-saving. Public health interventions should target factors which facilitate screening and how these interplay with barriers in order to improve uptake

    Entry in the ADHD drugs market: Welfare impact of generics and me-toos

    Recent decades have seen a growth in treatments for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) including many branded and generic drugs. In the early 2000's, new drug entry dramatically altered market shares. We estimate a demand system for ADHD drugs and assess the welfare impact of new drugs. We find that entry induced large welfare gains by reducing prices of substitute drugs, and by providing alternative delivery mechanisms for existing molecules. Our results suggest that the success of follow-on patented drugs may come from unanticipated innovations like delivery mechanisms, a factor ignored by proposals to retard new follow-on drug approvals

    Barriers to Entry into the Specialty Red Meat Sector: The Role of Food Safety Regulation

    Historically, the rules governing red meat food safety in the U.S. were driven as much by global trade and industry rationalization as by food safety. Contemporary and historical documents, statutes, and regulations; a survey of producer and farmers’ market representatives; and key informant interviews show that these rules, and their implementation, have affected the current development of niche marketing opportunities. Three significant issues arise from this research: a) the elimination of the state meat inspections limits producer access to slaughter; b) the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) rule limits producer access to processing; and c) uncertainty at the local level limits producer access to direct markets. We conclude that the accumulated rules affect producers’ quality of life; and they raise several issues about the relationship between sustainability and policy including barrier mitigation, balancing competing qualities, and the effects of the broader policy context

This paper signalises the tendency in corporate communication with its internal and external publics. It is focused on two issues: corporate social responsibility and employer branding. Those two categories are consequences of corporate culture model.Głównym celem artykułu jest zaprezentowanie wpływu jaki wywiera charakter kultury korporacyjnej na związanych z przedsiębiorstwem interesariuszy (stakeholders). W artykule zasygnalizowane zostały główne tendencje wyznaczające charakter komunikacji między organizacją a jej wewnętrznym i zewnętrznym otoczeniem. Tekst koncentruje się na dwóch kwestiach: społecznej odpowiedzialności przedsiębiorstwa (corporate social responsibilty) i budowanie wizerunku pracodawcy (employer branding), które zaprezentowane zostały jako efekty określonego modelu kultury organizacyjnej

    Orbit spaces of free involutions on the product of two projective spaces

    Let XX be a finitistic space having the mod 2 cohomology algebra of the product of two projective spaces. We study free involutions on XX and determine the possible mod 2 cohomology algebra of orbit space of any free involution, using the Leray spectral sequence associated to the Borel fibration XXZ2BZ2X \hookrightarrow X_{\mathbb{Z}_2} \longrightarrow B_{\mathbb{Z}_2}. We also give an application of our result to show that if XX has the mod 2 cohomology algebra of the product of two real projective spaces (respectively complex projective spaces), then there does not exist any Z2\mathbb{Z}_2-equivariant map from SkX\mathbb{S}^k \to X for k2k \geq 2 (respectively k3k \geq 3), where Sk\mathbb{S}^k is equipped with the antipodal involution.Comment: 14 pages, to appear in Results in Mathematic
